Parts of Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature, and permits the sensation of touch, heat and cold.

Skin has three layers :

The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.

The skin color is created by special cells called melanocytes, which produce pigment melanin. Melanocytes are located in the epidermis.

There are five layers of the epidermis :-

Stratum basale, Stratum spinosum, Stratum granulosum, Stratum lucidum, Stratum corneum

Dermis :-

  • The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
  • The dermis is split into two parts - papillary dermis, which is thin, upper layer, and the reticular dermis, which is the thick, lower layer.
  • The dermis is consist of three types of tissues that are Collagen, Elastic tissue and reticular fibres.
  • It also includes specialised cells and structures called as hair follicles and Sebaceous glands.
  • Subcutaneous layer or hypodermis

  • The deeper subcutaneous tissue(hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.
  • The thickness of this layer varies depending on where it's located on the body- for example, it 's thickest on the buttocks, the soles of the feet, and the palms of the hands.
  • The skin's color is created by special cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin. Melanocytes are located in the epidermis.
